Meghan Turner – Patient Testimonial
In 2021, I committed to being a collegiate runner, but my freshman year was tough. Despite giving my all in training and races, my times didn’t reflect my effort. I struggled mentally, unsure if I was dealing with normal soreness or an injury. Trainers assured me it was just soreness, but the pain persisted. After a difficult race at regionals in Florida, I decided to see a doctor. An x-ray revealed, I needed surgery on both hips, with labral tears and a bilateral periacetabular osteotomy (PAO) required. My dad, a hip orthopedic marketing specialist, contacted Dr. Stephen Duncan, who connected us with Dr. Clohisy, a surgeon who specializes in getting athletes back to doing the sport they love.
We traveled from Memphis to St. Louis during the pandemic, navigating delays to secure a surgery date. The recovery was grueling, but with incredible support from my family and friends, I completed both surgeries and committed to an “attitude for success.” Post-surgery, I embraced cross-training and strength work, determined to return to running. Slowly, I improved, consistently running faster times and becoming competitive in my conference.
This past cross-country season, I hit a personal best of 18:26 in the 5k, earned All-Conference honors, and proved to myself that I could overcome the odds. I’m excited to keep improving and pushing my limits. I can’t thank Dr. Clohisy, Nurse Madelyn, and Stephen Duncan enough for guiding me and helping me get back to doing what I love! I could not have ever imagined I would be where I am today and it’s in large part, thanks to them! I’d also like to thank Michelle and Michael Turner for always being there for me! I’d like to acknowledge Bradley Turner for pushing me to be my best and believing in me! Lastly, I would like to thank my Papa Oke/John Okerlin for putting me in the sport that I have fallen in love with all over again! I couldn’t have done it without you guys!
P.S. One piece of advice I would give to anyone going through a similar situation would be to have an attitude for success and show up to physical therapy. Don’t give up on yourself!
